This May, U of T’s Information and Technology Services (ITS) participated in a variety of events including TechKnowfile, Quercus Day, two Security Matters talks on managing your digital footprint and Science Rendezvous, Canada’s largest science festival held at the University of Toronto’s Bahen Centre.

TechKnowFile (TKF): May 3 – 4, 2018

TechKnowfile 2018 (U of T’s tech conference for staff and faculty), brought U of T’s technical experts and enthusiasts together at the St. George campus to explore a variety of topics including, information security, user experience design, software development, project management, digital currencies and more. The event was hosted primarily at the Bahen Centre, with over 800 attendees.

Quercus Day: May 7, 8, and 11, 2018

Quercus Day was held on all three campuses to share the latest information on the migration of course materials from the Blackboard portal to the U of T’s new learning management engine (LME), with around 100 attendees each at the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses, and 150 at St. George. Our team of Quercus specialists were a valuable resource in assisting the onboarding process for our university’s faculty through 1-on-1 user experience testing, feedback consultation, and feature demonstrations for key capabilities.

Science Rendezvous: May 12, 2018

Canada’s largest science festival, Science Rendezvous, was held at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus, and saw over 200 attendees, with over 170 visiting our ITS education and awareness team’s information security pop-up booth. There were lots of family-friendly activities including a pom-pom survey on device usage, prize wheel, a web game where the heroine, Patch defeats malware and many conversations with children and adults around security and protecting yourself online.

Security Matters talks: May 23 and May 30, 2018

U of T’s Security Matters initiative holds security outreach events led by Mike Wiseman from information, security, enterprise, and architecture (ISEA), and Chloe Payne from education and awareness. The security matters team held two presentations with a total of over 85 registered attendees in order to increase awareness about key takeaways from previous security and privacy breaches that our previous students and faculty have experienced.

The two presentations are:

  • Managing Your Digital Footprint: Student Edition, Koffler Student Centre (May 23, 2018), which covered security in both academic and personal contexts, and how to protect yourself online.
  • Practical Information Security at U of T, Bahen Centre (May 30, 2018), which covered safe desktop practices at home and work, and available tools to protect your online experience.
